Google “Public Car Auctions” in your area but you need to understand that most public car auctions are the lowest of the low, the bottom of the barrel, the final resting place of any used car that can’t be sold any other way. Most of the cars they sell are complete crap. Unsellable by even the cheapest used car lots. If it was a good car it wouldn’t end up at the public auction, it would end up at a dealer being sold for retail prices.

mccoy is right. I have been to pretty much every “public” auction in my area prior to becoming a dealer and they are just crap. The cars are crap, they don’t sell for crap which means very few legit dealers bother selling cars there.
I have been to county auctions where the county sells a few dozen cars about once a year and a power company auction where they sell LOTS of old cars.
No bargains.
The exception might be if you are a hands on type that can & will fix anything on a car, you might get a car at public auction for a fair price and then you can do the work to bring it up to snuff.
There tend to be a few dealers who “work” public auctions, that is, bring some pretty good cars there and then fish for a buyer. They never sell the cars on the auction block, usually outside or a day or week later at their car lot.
But, that just defeats the whole point of going to an auction because you will pay retail or nearly so.
My local sheriffs department sells maybe a dozen “court awarded” cars per year via ebay. I watch every one of them and live nearby so I could go down & drive one prior to bidding but the price is always so high with a day left that I never bother.
I think they sell for ABOVE retail because so many people think they are getting a deal they will pay anything.
true story. I bought a truck out of the newspaper for $ 1350. Sold it on the street a week or two later for $ 2800.
A year and a half and 30,000 miles later, the SAME truck sells for $ 3000 + buyers fee at a dealer only auction.
Even dealer only auctions are not bargains if you dont know values.

I got my current car at a government auction.
The service I used to get notified when a government auction took place in my area was an alert service.
Here is the service I used: http://best-offers-online.com/gov-auctions
I’m sure you will be able to find these auctions in Louisiana using this kind of service.
Good luck!
